They Gyms in my town (of around 20k people) cycle back and forth between around 5 people who play it (including myself) So no, I don't think there is a great many number of people in the game anymore.
The botched release of Gen 2 has been a complete missed opertunity, I had a thread about it and the majority figured it would make some people return to the game... but instead of updating the game with a big release of Gen 2 they tried to add them in a way to sell some incubators from the store, completely sacrificing any revival of interest from those who stopped but instead aimed directly at trying to milk the whales who are paying for the game right now.
