We've already got the Playstation aka the 'Sony Xbox' and the Xbox aka the 'Microsoft Playstation'. There simply isn't room in the console market for three practically identical systems separated only by proprietary formatting.
If Nintendo wants to keep making hardware (which they have to if they don't want to let a LOT of their employees go, which carries a massive stigma in Japanese business) then they have to either find or create a new niche.
There's no room on the console space, and mobile phones have changed the portable space away from the first party takes all landscape Nintendo used to thrive in.
So now it looks like they're focusing on making a handheld that can do what mobile phones and tablets can't, that is give you a console game like experience on the move.
It's the kind of thing that different enough that people maybe won't think to themselves "But I already have a phone" or "But I already have a playstation".
But having to optimise the game twice for docked and undocked, and with neither of those specs sounding to be all that powerful if rumours are to be believed, it might be too esoteric to develop for and publishers might wander off again.

Thats the real bummer. If third-party's didn't want to do extra work to support Wii U's game pad they sure as heck wont make two versions of games so the docked mode runs better. Which unfortunately means most if not all third party games will just be made to work at the portable spec. Bummer.

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!
