The more I think about it, the more I question exactly how exactly the Switch version even fits in.

The PS4 version, even if not totally amazingly system pushing, will still be the definitive console version.

The 3DS version will be the definitive handheld version.

The Switch version will be somewhere in between, not providing the handheld viability of the 3DS or the home console potential of the PS4. No matter which version it gets, the hardware will fail it either through battery life or system power.

This won't be a problem for potential lower end titles ported from PS4 to Switch, where a mobile version simply hasn't existed previously, thus leaving a gap in the market for the Switch to potentially fill, but in this specific scenario, it seems like a glaring flaw that the Switch version has no obvious spot to fill in the gaming market. I guess does it really matter what version the Switch ultimately gets?

That's some serious level of spin there, if the Switch version of DQXI is like the PS4 one is obviously the best handheld version period, and since it offers you portability that could easily be a selling point over the Ps4 version for many people, specially on Japan.

Graphics don't suddenly make the best version of a game. If the 3DS version is technically superior in what it sets out to do compared to the Switch version, the 3DS version is the definitive handheld iteration. The difference will be that the 3DS version feels like a handheld title, while the Switch version may end up simply feeling like a significantly inferior version of the PS4 title. I won't make any assumptions about how much Japan may or may not gravitate to the Switch, but I doubt they'll buy a new console to play the lesser version of a game when they would be perfectly content with the 3DS version. Considering how long Japan was willing to hang onto the PS3 before jumping to the PS4, I doubt the Switch is going to usurp the 3DS in time for the DQ XI release, particularly with its ambigious nature as a half console half handheld device.

It isn't spin when there is such a significant level of uncertainty. My realist outlook beats blind belief that the Switch version of the game is going to occupy a hole in the market that has already been filled.
