The more I think about it, the more I question exactly how exactly the Switch version even fits in.

The PS4 version, even if not totally amazingly system pushing, will still be the definitive console version.

The 3DS version will be the definitive handheld version.

The Switch version will be somewhere in between, not providing the handheld viability of the 3DS or the home console potential of the PS4. No matter which version it gets, the hardware will fail it either through battery life or system power.

This won't be a problem for potential lower end titles ported from PS4 to Switch, where a mobile version simply hasn't existed previously, thus leaving a gap in the market for the Switch to potentially fill, but in this specific scenario, it seems like a glaring flaw that the Switch version has no obvious spot to fill in the gaming market. I guess does it really matter what version the Switch ultimately gets?

It's not rocket science tbh it'll likely be a scaled version of the PS4 version with the idea of giving that version more sales as it's the more expensive one to develop, 3DS will outsell both combined and after the below par performance of XV in Japan due to the decline in home consoles the Switch version will likely be the one they're banking on to make up the sales to cover development costs.

DQXI doesn't look that complex for the hardware to run especially given how DQ games, DQX has a version running on the 3DS for reference.

DQX isn't a very good development landmark for the series. It's a weird entry that has been ported all over the place to try to get more sales and keep a reasonably sized playerbase as an MMO. It may be the most ported MMORPG ever, but I'm not willing to Google my way to a definitive answer there. They made a lot of sacrificies to get the game on as many consoles as possible.

Also, you can't compare XV sales to DQ in Japan. Dragon Quest is much, much more popular while Final Fantasy gave up around the end of the PS2 era and decided to shift focus over to Western appeal. I would not be surprised to see Dragon Quest XI break 4 million in Japan alone. The new numbered entries always sell well no matter what they release on. Even DQ IX on the DS pushed 4.35 million sales in Japan.

Knowing that is also why I question the placement of the Switch version. They don't need it to make up for the PS4 development because 3DS sales and the international release will more than accomplish that. The PS4 version won't sell as well as the 3DS version, sure, but I still won't be surprised if it pushes over a million in Japan while the 3DS version does something more like 3 - 3.5 million.
