Nope, it actually happened two years in a row. New England and St. Louis missed the 2002 playoffs after Super Bowl 36. The following year, the Super Bowl 37 teams, Tampa Bay and Oakland, both missed the 2003 playoffs.

Well it doesn't happen very often though Oakland missed the following year because that team was old I guess that also applied to Tampa Bay.  New England missed because Brady was injured the following season and I guess St. Louis missed because of injuries and age.
