Axe and Smash are both part of the Class Action lawsuit filed against the WWE regarding CTE.  New Day breaking the record was a foregone conclusion.  All three members could have been injured and they still would have found a way to erase Demolition from the record books.  They would have made New Day into masked wrestlers and had Rich Swan, Cedric Alexander, and Titus defending the belts.

This actually answers a lot of questions. There are better tag teams out there but these guys are selling merch and Vince gets to snub people who sue him? That is pretty much win win in the WWE handbook.
