You are right, pretty early on in the game, if you wanted to, you could wander to areas of the game far higher in level than you currently were, aside from some mini bosses in the way here or there, plus entirely optional areas too. It had an overworld map but that was more for fast travel than anything.

Yeah, there was a level of freedom in that game that, while not necessarily as open as in FF15, would let you go to any number of places pretty early.  You could even stumble onto optional bosses and get destroyed.  This is one of the reasons I look at FF12 so highly, especially compared with FF10 and FF13. It felt more like a world.

There are still a lot of hidden walls that restrict freedom which feels weird when playing.  Even the car you drive doesn't feel like you have complete control and the chocobos plus the flying post game you have restrictions on where you can go.

The story is disjointed and things that occur throughout the game are never really explained leaving you draw your own conclusions on what occured.  I gotta say that the game tries to be resident evil, dragon ball, kingdom hearts, star ocean and fallout and taken small pieces of all of these and tried to compact them into one game.  But the main story is short.  there are moments that will probably blow you away with its crazy over the top scenarios but overall it feels amaturish and the creators don't have any respect for this series anymore.  Certainly don't feel like a complete "big" game more of a side story spin off which is was originally.

What I actually like about this game is the side quests that have nothing to do with the main story.  Ie help a professors assistant collect frogs, rescue a chocobo from dangerous monsters, defeat monsters for gil.  There are loads of these mini quests and I find them more rewarding than completing the main story.
