That large portable following is the only way for developers to possibly return to the performance of years long gone with the home console side of things ever declining. Eastern developers can't ignore their own back yard because business would become very wonky depending solely on overseas markets, under this sentiment I agree that they can no longer afford to pick one preferred platform as 600k for FF is shockingly low and highlights why DQXI has a 3DS and Switch version. The console decline in Japan has just become too significant. I think if Switch takes off well people in future may be in for some surprises in games/series that move to the platform and tbh if the platform is priced right I don't think anything is going to stop it in Japan. |
Dragon Quest games were already with Nintendo last gen, PS4 sales of FFXV don't highlight anything, actually, PS4 getting it highlight SE is happy enough with Sony on Japan again (DQ is primarly strongly focused on Japan) to go back to releasing Dragon Quest for it.

DQ on PS4 I think was made with the incorrect assumption that PS4 would revive console gaming in Japan and be a big success there.
It hasn't played out that way. They are very lucky they have a 3DS and Switch version of that because there would be full on panic at SE if they had opted to make that PS4-only.
