This. Zelda has always had an exaggerated, stylistic aesthetic. Technology has held it back. See the concept art for the N64 versions versus the finished product. The in-game graphics are angular and relatively subdued in terms of colour scheme. Yet, the art is stylised and colourful. This holds up through the 3DS versions, which realise what the N64 couldn't.
