They had several intervalls of taking pre-orders. One fairly early on, one(or two, not sure) a little closer to release and then a last one a few days before release. They kept selling out really fast.

Amazon themselves would have at least a rough estimate of further demand by the people signing up for notification when pre-orders are available and how fast they sold out each time and probably place more orders accordingly.  They are also huge and probably have a good Idea how much of their order is going to be delivered. I got my notification saying that I wouldn't recieve my NES classic in time for launch, but with the next shipment a couple of days before launch. That makes it seem to me like Nintendo suddenly cancelled out some shipments on them.
