Even today he still sounds like a walking, talking robot who can't emote for shit.
In politics this stuff matters. Besides, immediately in the wake of 9/11 I think Americans put a premium on "unity" so rallying around that was a benefit to Bush who was never really a hugely popular president to begin with. But he benefitted from that, it wasn't until 2005/2006 that widespread back lash to the Iraq War and the general "War on Terror" started to filter in even amongst people on the right.
