Gotta take a few things into account.

Switch in 2017 is far more powerful in comparison to 3DS in 2011 so the hardware has more bang for your buck at that price.

3DS initially was confused as a DS with 3D instead of a brand new device.

3DS had a terrible post-launch software drought. Nintendogs+Cats & Ocarina of Time 3D were the only big 1st party titles in the first 6 months.

I agree that price was an issue, but it wouldnt have been nearly as big of an issue if 3DS had powerful hardware for that price, a less confusing name/concept and a strong lineup of games.
