I think that not thinking that way is what separates companies like Apple and Disney from companies like Sony and Nintendo. You have a success, and you seak to surpass it and keep momentum going, always one-upping yourself. So yeah, it's exactly like saying that all Platstation consoles and all Nintendo handhelds need to sell over 150 million because it's the standard. The gold standard. If I was running a company that had successes like that, and I told my staff that our next thing had to surpass that, and they said it can't be done because of XYZ, they'd all be fired because that's a failure's mindset. In a universe of infinite possibilities, there is always a possibility for greater success, and these companies have the recourses and talent in spades to have them. |
Im not saying they shouldnt try to reach or surpass those numbers but at the same time it shouldnt be considered a failure for not hitting those numbers.
If PS4 sells 120 million than its a huge success whether or not it surpassed PS2. Just like a 15 million selling Mario Kart title is a huge success even if it does not surpass MK Wii.
When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.
