But i agree with the overall point that MK8 is being held back by the Wii U install base and has potential to sell much more by being on a popular device.

I think that not thinking that way is what separates companies like Apple and Disney from companies like Sony and Nintendo. You have a success, and you seak to surpass it and keep momentum going, always one-upping yourself. If I was running a company that had successes like that, and I told my staff that our next thing had to surpass that, and they said it can't be done because of XYZ, they'd all be fired because that's a failure's mindset. In a universe of infinite possibilities, there is always a possibility for greater success, and these companies have the resources and talent in spades to make them happen with consistency and exponentiality.
