You also got Mario 64 launching with the N64 and that sold like gangbusters during its launch year. Unfortunately the lack of further titles, especially those from third party, did the console in.

TP had the luxury to be released with Wii Sports, which was the ultimate killer app for the Wii, regardless of what impact TP had at launch.

And you're also comparing 2D Mario (which ultimately got criticized for being too similar to the other NSMB games) and 3D World (to which some here claim isn't a "true" 3D Mario which is kinda weird) to potentially the "true" 3D Mario game akin to Galaxy, Sunshine, and 64. Of course we dont know everything about it but you can't dismiss a 3D Mario game especially as a launch game.

Like I said in the other thread, Mario does not have the same impact on launch as Zelda. Mario is an evergreen title and people can wait. This does not apply to Zelda. Even if the game sells only a half, more Zelda fans are willing to buy new hardware than 3D Mario fans.

I kinda agree with Pavolink here. Especially after all the hype created last E3 with the special demo, BotW is the game all hardcore nintendo gamers are waiting for, and "delaying" it will create a negative buzz (it's already creating it) that can harm somehow the console launch. "Hardcore nintendo gamers" are not the ones that will make the console a success, but they are the first ones that will buy the console and attracting them the sooner possible its crucial to create critical mass to attract new consumers and third parties. Especially launching in March and not during Holidays: many Mario buyers will wait until Christmas or their birthday to buy the Switch, while Zelda sales should be more front-loaded, moving consoles from the beginning.

Mario has a broader general appeal than Zelda, and a great appeal among nintendo fans, but there isn't such a big hype with it as with BotW, and except it proves to be something really revolutionary on Jan 12 , it probably won't move nintendo fans as Zelda would. Of course it's nothing irreparable, and launching with a main 3D Mario is probably the 2nd best option for Switch, but it's a missed oportunity.

Maybe 3D Mario + another hardcore nintendo franchise (ideally Metroid, though F-ZERO could also send a good message to dissapointed Nintendo fans) could fill the Zelda hole, or a really good 3rd party support. I guess we have to wait and see.
