I understand your point completely, but this game was not made for everyone. If it does, it cheapens its value as a profitable but niche game that few have bested let alone platinumed. Also yes, it does give those who arent the feint of heart bragging rights. Most games want to be profitable and reach the greatest audiences. Games that are not for everyone and strive to maintain who they are will refuse to sell out to their product. In this day and age that is truly brave. If they want to fit in they must test themselves. A friend of mine gave me his Dark Souls out of frustration when I was in college because he knows I like to play harder level games that demand more out of you (including puzzles). He was about to break it and this is one of my friends who plays Zelda. Similar style of play, completely different different audiences though.

Ok, I understand your point, but I don't think they would lose from attracting more gamers (do you really think the niche they have would abandon then just because they added an "easy option")?

It wouldnt be dark souls if it had an easy mode. it would abandon its reason for being. This is a niche game for a hardened audience.Demon Souls would never have become famous if it was easy. In a market that is filled with easy mode players dark souls dared to fill the need of hardened gamers who arent challenged. Think about this....if Dead pool was rated PG-13 so kids could get into it...would it have been a true deadpool movie? Robocops reboot was PG-13 and look how much it took from the heart and soul of what ws Robo cop just to try and find a wider audience. Sometimes you have to have faith in the character and premise is going to go over with the audience it was meant to be shown to. They were scared for Deadpool and it ended up breaking records for rated R movies. Dead Pool couldnt have been portrayed properly with a PG 13 rating and neither could Dark Souls if an Easy mode option. It doesnt hurt the real gamers...but it sells out to what it is. Its the basic concept of principle over profit and luckily for Dark Souls its one of few games of its kind that are profitable.
