They won by 10 k due to the crazy deals in order to clear the original Xbox Stock. They won by over 100k+ due to the release of the Xbox One S + 2-3 months of Pre-order.
They took September because the last model, and the most affordable one, of the Xbox One S launched in the end of the previous month, PS4 Slim wasn't successful.
We don't have enough data to say if they had a good advantage on October. If they won by a few thousands even with Gears + Battlefield deal + Pro's pre-orders, then it will have a hard time against the PS4 Pro(Sony has a good 1-2Q line up). And it will become harder and harder the closer we get to the Scorpio's release date.
Last January, Sony had the advantage of 110-140k. Xbox One has the advantage of over 180k in the last 3 months( still need to know the numbers of October). The Xbox will only make a comeback if they outsell the PS4 in November or December of this year. Otherwise, The gap will be too big, due to the strong early-mid 2017 that Sony will have, that not even the Scorpio's launch will be able to close the gap, turn the tides for Microsoft.
