It is, because namely, it leads to lack of competition which was what allowed Sony to say no to mods. Desperation seems like the best tool to obtain what you want and the more reasons Sony has to offer me more of what I want the better... 

It doesn't lead to a lack of competition, Microsoft has just found themselves unable to compete because they started this generation by sawing a leg off. The only cause for the lack of competition is Microsoft's willingness to back out.
