It's the Soviet Union to be clear. (still kind of spectacular since they came from about 23% in the 1930's)

Wikipedia lists the US population as around 325 million and EU population as around 510 million.  Are there some big member states you aren't counting in your claim (excluding both economic output and population)? 

I said the Soviet Union, not the European Union.
