Well, I don't know which "path" is the best. But I will say that in the US our congress has pretty much never adopted a centrist attitude. We need a majority of support for bills to pass in Congress and at the end of the day most bills only get passed when a majority of the hosue is dominated by the left or right party. As far as I'm concerned a centrist attitude would do way more for progress than harm.
