And why is it called "world series" if only North Americans play against each other? That title sounds pretentious.

We don't call the European soccer championship "world championship", "solar championship" or "milky way championship.

Probably because we thought up until recently that we were the only ones that mattered in the world. But then this past decade or so we have slowly learned that we do not really matter.  Too late though, it is the World Series.

Or they thought Baseball would pick up and be something that the whole world cared about.

It was originally probably intended to be open to foreign teams I think.  But it just never took off.  NFL similarly tried foreign expansion iirc, which failed.  But it is worth noting, there is the Toronto Blue Jays, so there is *a* foreign team.  I would be open to seeing the World series expand to those areas where it makes sense.  Japan would be an obvious choice.  But, to be a bit pretentious, that the winner of the World Series is the greatest teamin the world at that time is kinda undebated since the talent pool for pro baseball is so radically skewed towards the US.
