That's what worries me. I want to get a switch, but worry if it underperforms Nintendo will sweep it under the rug like Wii U and leave me with nothing to play again. Im still mulling over wether to go full on Playstation, as I currently divide my gaming time evenly between PS4 and Wii U.

Take a wait-and-see approach. If Switch is getting games you wanna play and it's selling well, buy one.
