I don't get these responses of Color Splash being terrible. People who have played it said it's pretty darn good. Maybe not as good as TTYD, but not something to ignore or put down. Even GameXplain praised the game despite its flaws (and hating Sticker Star) and recommended it. You don't have to agree, but you can at least take their opinions into consideration since they actually played the damn game.
It's like Star Fox Zero. Some don't like it because of the controls. I personally do and thought it was a solid game. It's unfortunate that it has low sales but alas it's the way it is.
Then you got games like Tokyo Mirage Sessions, which has been positively received but still has low sales. Why aren't people playing that game? Because it's not what they want?
Why is it that it has to be "do what we want or bust" kind of mentality? If it was like that, we wouldn't be showering love to games like the Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Wii sports, etc.
There are probably a lot of factors on why Color Splash isn't doing well, but being received as a bad game isn't one of them when it was received favorably by those who played it. Maybe it'll be considered a great hidden gem one day like Captain Toad, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Mario and Sonic at Rio, FFV, and a few others on Wii U.
