It depends on the FE too. Radiant Dawn/Path of Radiance had great battles (Hard mode), Awakening is barely interesting even in Lunatic mode (interesting before the chapter 4 IIRC, it drops fast after you get the free roaming). Didn't play Fates because of this :/

You're missing out, Fates (atleast Conquest, haven't played the other paths) has waaaaaay better map design and mechanics than Awakening!
