I mean Shane started getting a bit off the rails as season 2 went down to the wire, but most of the way he was the only one thinking rationally given their situation.

Rick realized Shane was right after that and made a lot of decisions the way Shane would have.  The world they live in is awful and cruel, do what you have to survive.  Being nice gets people killed over and over.
