You will get better image quality in 1080p by a very noticable margin. No aliasing etc.
When he talks about 3 manweeks he just means to implement checkerboard rendering by itself.
I don't know of any games below 900p and 900p games do very well with 1800p checkerboard rendering to 4k so theres that.
