It makes perfect sense when you consider that this is a 9th generation machine and Nintendo likes to use prior generation specs when launching a new console. Think about it... the Wii could play PS2 games... Wii-U could play Xbox 360 games... this is perfectly in line with what they've been doing since 2006.
