I think the argument is that it's not a good console because it is a handheld. Having a TV out does not make this a good console automatically.

No, it isn't. The argument is that it isn't a home console, that's why the title of the thread we're talking about says that Nintendo has quitted console gaming. If you've made a bad product you haven't quitted.
