This handheld generation started close to 6 years ago. There's 3 times more smartphone buyers per year now that in 2011. The average handheld sales for the 3DS has declined every year since 2012 and overall handheld shipments have averaged less than 8M per year in the past 2 years. The only reason the 3DS sold so many is because of repeat buyers of the different revisions and the very low prices.
I'm not saying there's absolutely no market. There is but it's a very small one.
