I think the shell comes with it for use with the console mode, because I think it ups the battery life and the range of the joycon. I don't think the joycon have a big range in handheld mode to save on battery life. Its a give and take thing.

Plus you need to be close to see what's on the screen anyway. I wonder about the battery life though. HD screen, detachable controllers, and Wii U level power must be very taxing.

Yeah thats one of its bigger worries, if it compares to the 3DS though then it should be fine
