It will confuse the consumers if they did that and potentially compete with themselves... But we don't know if thats even going to be a thing so we should just speculate on what we do know. Nintendo can call it a home console "first and foremost" but if it acts like a handheld that can connect to the TV, then that is what most people will see it as. They did show quite a bit of portability on its trailer so I doubt the battery will be short. Even if it isn't very long, it still has to be a consideration if they are going to advertise it as portable device in any sense. They showed it being played on airplanes and car trips so... And yea, I wouldn't doubt that there might be a power saving technique like that. |
It's only odd if you look at vague similarities, NX I've suspected was always going to be a family of devices under one ecosystem but different execution in what they do. Most people will see NS as a console that can act like a portable, 3DS' successor is likely a portable only device that may even touch on some mobile aspects but not connect to a TV, they may overlap in some aspects but won't be the same.
Portable just means you can take it with you, if it has poor battery life but comes with a convenient charging cable it's still portable and can still be marketed as such.
