That only seems like it would be worthwhile if the NX is successful straight away though, which isn`t guaranteed.. Otherwise another gen 7 game wouldn`t be anywhere near as much of a system seller as a gen 8 game and would just be better off with the larger install base of the 3DS instead.

I think being the first HD Pokemon game that maybe can be played on the TV will automatically make for a big system seller regardless of the gen. You're probably right though, another Gen 7 game on 3DS next year then gen 8 in 2018 on NX would make a lot of sense. Even Nintendo themselves are still supporting 3DS next year so Gamefreak definitely will too.
