No it's not the "modern way" it's actually pretty limited and gives kernel access only not OS and doesn't modify anything because it technically can't. Well maybe it is modern because kernel hacks are becoming more common as they're easier namely PS4 has a kernel hack at 1.76 FW that can even run linux and PSVita recently got one allowing game backup loading and a lot of good stuff. Also all of the systems got hacked through a web browser exploit.
