For those players, the games they play are like a sport. I love hockey, I play it all the time, and every game is a new experience. It's noteworthy that all the games you mention have a heavy multiplayer and usually competitive element. That makes each game a new experience, with the game being more of an arena for the actual game experience to take place.
Personally, I'm addicted to Age of Empires II. I've played a couple thousand hours on the HD version of that ancient game. I try to force myself to play new game experiences on my Wii U and XBox, but I find a round of AOE to be very relaxing after a day of work.
