The 3DS should be fine until sales start dropping off in a significant way. It sold second only to the PS4 on the last VGC update.

While I won't make any predictions about how well it will do over the '16 holiday season, I see no reason why they would drop significantly, given that the NX hasn't been pushed as a 3DS replacement. Plus a significant number of those 3DS sales are going to the children's market, something the NX is unlikely to immediately replace unless comparably priced.

It should continue on as a low cost alternative to the NX, albeit with gradually reduced software support. The existing user base is far too high to cut off sharply.

I do have to say that I am a bit surprised over the lack of build up for the NX. Granted, I haven't been following it closely, but if Nintendo intends a '16 release, doing a stealthy launch is probably not the best approach.
