Yeah, the social thing is important. And the new Gears looks like a good multiplayer shooter. Have you played the old ones online?
Personally I love the long matches. I get a stronger sense of immersion and that it all matters. My biggest problem with online shooters is that after a while I get a strong feeling of "I'm playing this hour after hour but none of this actually matters lol" and then I put the game off. The longer matches help with creating the illusion of meaning and purpose.
