IIRC they profited on each console sold if it included the sale of 1 game.

So the hardware made loses, and this was before the price cut. I'm sure its profitable by now, whether they made more money on throughout the generation on Wii U hardware then they lost is another question. Back in 2014 Iwata said further price cuts were "not an option".
