Going by the recent rumour the whole hybrid thing is a misinterpretation, the way it's describe is more along the lines of two stand alone devices executing one concept with one device having some slight portable function. This is why 3DS is still getting support well into 2017 as the NX platform coming is not a replacement for it but the Wii U's successor, the 3DS successor will probably arrive in 2018.
The portable device is said to be barebones much like the gamepad, the two devices make up the SKU with the portable device likely housing the interface to interact with features and play games.
