Considering the fact that the WiiU has lost more than 85% of its original userbase compared with the 44% of the 3DS, Nintendo knows they can't put all their eggs in two baskets anymore. And if they have to choose, they'll chose handhelds. Even now, it's the thing that is giving them profits, compared to the money hole of the WiiU.

And you are not kidding. Nintendo is loosing consumers on all fronts and they are in a very bad position right now. But they have been in tough spots before and still managed to pull through. Never count Nintendo out. The NX will cater to both markets somehow. And until they actually show the NX, we won't know how they will do it. The only guarantee is that Nintendo is consolidating their portable and home console markets into one. And how they plan to do it is the big mystery.
