Nintendo and Sony have to bring out Handheld/Phone hybrids in 2017.

If team Japan wanted to take on the American mobile loards, then they definitly could turn it into a three way battle between iOS, Android, and the Sony/Nintendo OS. However, I don't see Sony and Nintendo ever teaming up. Even alone they would do just fine though. even 50 Million a piece over 5 years, and they would have two solid mobile platforms. Again, they don't have to dominate Apple and Google, they just have to make money. 

As for the mobile market being oversaturated. Yes, the Slab phone space is, but the market offers no options. iPhone, Galaxy, Xperia, Pixel, etc. are all the same thing. There is no option for specialized phones, and that is where Nintendo and Sony can shine, and Micorosft as well.

Sony definitly does, as they already release new phones, TVs, cameras, headphones, Blu-ray players, etc. every single year. Sony could easily drop Xperia and start putting out new PlayStation  phones with yearly revisions for the latest bluetooth, nfc, and other communication tech, while doing major upgrade every 3 years like they have done with PS4 to PS4 Pro.

Sony is loosing more and more marketshare in the smartphone business every year. Two years ago Xperia was outselling PS4 3:1, while loosing billions. This year they are looking to sell 20 Million PS4s at over a  Billion in profits, and 15 Million Xperias with a Loss.

Xperia is in a downward spiral with no hope of growing marketshare. A PlayStation Phone is the only thing they could do to turn around their mobile fortunes. They will never gain ground with a me too Xperia phone in the over saturated slab phone market. They have to offer something new to the market that brings experiences not possible on the current duoply devices.

Be serious. Why would they offer that smartphones don't already? Physical buttons? You think that the majority of smartphone users care about that?

And making consoles is a entirely different process than making all those things. They'd have to have at least 2 kinds of handhelds at launch, and they'd constantly have to design more. A handheld is different from a smartphone in that it's primary feature is to play games. They'd have to have CPUs, GPUs that are specifically designed for that. Adding smartphone features will just further complicate the process.

No, I don't think the majority of people want physical buttons. I do think there are 200 million gamers out there that would love to have Nintendo and Sony handhelds with phone capabailites though.

I fail to see where you are going with adding smartphone features would complicate the process. Smartphone features are just apps. The ability to control your garage door, use gps, check your bank, log your fitness, listen to streaming music, make calls, or use social media all happens through apps. PS Vita could already pause games to take a call on Skpye. PS4, XBO, Vita all have notifications systems in place. The ability to quickly switch between apps is already possible on PS4, XBO, and Vita. 

Yes, smartphones are different than handhelds, but, there is also a massive amount of cross over between the two. Making multiple versions, and having yearly revisions is not an issue in the slightest.
