Yeah, as you guessed, the video is BS... and doesn't actually tell why, although it skirts around the topic.
It is premised on idea /all/ blueray drives are firmware upgrade-able to UHD-BD capability.
OK. Although if true, then not just Pro, but OG PS4 and OG Xbone should be firmware upgrade-able.
(og version would be limited to 30fps, but so what for video? and given HDR patch to PS4 even that may not be true(?))
Unless they ARE upgrade-ing spec for UHD-BD, then no reason they shouldn't use same drive as og/slim PS4.
If the spec is different (vs. og/slim PS4), then there is a potential cost involved, even if only $1.
At which point, question is not "When Sony will Flash Firmware" but "Why they cheapskate out on us?"
But video doesn't do anything to demonstrate spec of either Pro or OG/Slim drives, and compare that to UHD-BD spec.
It doesn't establish that the hardware is fully capable, and thus a firmware flash away from 4k,
or establish the opposite, which would at least introduce a small cost rationale in the "Why not 4k" question.
So it just doesn't answer that question at all, although it speculates Sony's motives in standalone players.
But yeah, most of the video is just a waste of time, especially as it doesn't really get down to the details.
Like, if they wanted to, they could tell the actual spec of OG PS4 drive, whether it meets full UHD-BD spec or not.
(I think most would agree meeting the spec is relevant part, sure OG BD can technically manage 4k video, but doesn't meet spec)
Or try hacking in the BD drive of OG PS4/Xbone into PC, and try to flash firmware/ get it play 4k video.
Basically the video creator read half-way thru some threads on internet, and made a video repeating some lingo
that they barely understand themself, and actually didn't answer premise of video "What's stopping 4k video".
