NINTENDO's own patents which came tolight after the point, really do back up much of what was said of the NX. |
Yeah, kind of crazy, IMHO...
And like I said, if NX ends up in similar config, what will they say then, after saying the concept is horrible?
But exactly as you note, the main selling point is Nintendo's games, and of course the home console/dock feature.
But, hey, it's more fun to let the Nintendo fans thrash on the configuration that NX will likely use in the end.
| onionberry said: Because the nx is "a new concept, a new way to play" editors were wrong about the wii, they could be wrong about the nx. And this thing is not similar to the leak, its he same thing. |
The same thing... except no docking port with enhanced performance (co-processor that kicks in to boost power) in TV mode.
Which was kind of the actual central concept of "hybrid handheld/console", right? Detacheable controls or not is tangential.
I mean, nothing says you HAVE to detach them. NX will be usable with dedicated separate controllers in TV mode as well.

no one can copy the exact tech they used. theres nothing stopping Nintendo from having something similar but that worked differently using different tech. |
What fucking "tech" do you think is "patented" here? Nothing. It's a no-name assembler putting together standard parts.
I doubt they have any patent at all, they would just have a design copyright which is just re: really specific aesthetic details.
Plugging two pieces of electronics together is nothing new.

I don't see the NX winning over the Tablet crowd, and I don't see a tablet sized device winning over the 3ds crowd. It would be a fairly niche device. |
Agreed... The 720p makes sense because to push more pixels than that is too heavy on GPU/battery life...
Although honestly, they could have used 1440p screen and just direct 2x upscale games (or even use full res on "simple" games)
But the size thing itself is important, IMHO. Nintendo's current hand-held fan base is used to, and likes, small handhelds.
Changing it to be as big as a tablet is a disruption, and if anything may prompt some to just use a tablet/smartphone for games.
Especially considering Nintendo themself are now publishing games for smartphones.
| JWeinCom said: Making a tablet that could hook up to a TV isn't anything special. Tablets can do that, and the technology will imrpove. |
To be clear, "hooking up to a TV" is not what is special about NX concept.
It actually has separate unit which allows it to increase power draw and increase power (CPU/GPU).
In fact, that unit is supposed to have it's own battery so you can take it on the go if you really want to,
although the assumption is that it will usually be used plugged in, and handheld-alone will be used on the go.
| JWeinCom said: Execution being important kind of goes without saying, whatever the product is. I just can't understand how this is going to expand their audience at all. What is the pitch to the casual gamer who doesn't really care about Nintendo games? Now you can not care about them at home and on the go? |
I don't think Nintendo can realistically aim to expand their audience significantly beyond what they have.
They reached far with Wii and DS hit a sweet spot, but mobile phones will be heavy competition for "casuals".
They can still appeal there, but I don't think it can be AS successfull in that market.
So they want to make sure they can appeal to their "core" market, and they are unifying mobile/home to do that.
Sometime the prudent strategy is not deluding yourself that a past peak is a repeatable goal to aim for.
