Personally I prefer XCX, but I am big RPG fan that also doesn't mind grinding for levels killing various creatures or going to online guides to find where items that are vaguely labeled or described in mission objectives are. It is a great game but highly flawed at the same time and in more then one way feels unfinished.
Meanwhile Captain Toad is a good game if you are more into puzzles. While not as expansive as all the things you can get up to in XCX, it is a complete experience in terms of giving you a number of puzzles to complete. Although once it is done, aside from just improving yourself there isn't that much to go back for. It is up to you which you want I wouldn't say comparing the two is a great comparison though they are vastly different products.
