Hm. It seems like the Department of Justice disagrees with the Deparment of Homeland Security on this. In 2009, the DHS identified 221,000 noncitizens in the overall prison population, while the DoJ only recorded 95,000 in that year. The DHS also estimated that immigrants, legal and illegal, make up a disproportionate share of the prison population.

Interesting.  Thanks for the links.  I had always thought the Census Bureau data was extremely solid, but it looks like at least in 2000 there were some definite cracks in the system (although most data was fine).
