If they keep it safe and do a cheap console, they can make good numbers and keep going. Then I see no major growth to their product. Maybe Mario Jump help get people to get some sales. But it won't reach nice numbers.

If they make a 400 bucks console and the 3rd party option backfires, they will end up with another Wii U and now without a 3DS to back it up since it's a single platform. Selling just 15M consoles in a single gen (since it's a combined platform) would pretty much do a massive damage to Nintendo. Nintendo wouldn't just discontinue the 3DS. Intill they know the NX is in a okay shape. Just like the GBA was planned. If the DS didn't work.

Casuals are their best shot right now. PS4 is a massively competent product that will get a cheaper model and a more powerful one, VR, exclusives. It has 3 years of library, bundles. It's absolutely suicidal to go against it. Do you really think that core gamers that do care about 3rd parties will:

a) Get a PS4 Slim or Pro and have 100% certain that all 3rd party games are coming.

b) Get a NX and pray that things will be different from the last 4 Nintendo consoles.

It's kind of a no-brainer.

They won't discontinue 3DS. But it isn't pouring healthy numbers right now ene with models close to 100 bucks, so it's not a viable fallback. The NX will just kill 3DS numbers anyway. If it doesn't (a miracle), the current fall will do. It isn't really comparable to GBA that was still selling well, 3DS is 5 years old already.
