Nintendo doesn't really need to have some massive successful console to be relevant. Gamecube was outsold by PS2 and Xbox but gamecube still made Nintendo money. Nintendo's woes wouldn't be so bad if the Wii U wasn't sold at a loss. Gamecube did sell better than Wii U but it was $199 and soon it was $99. Nintendo will be fine doing their own thing and if occasionally they pull a DS or Wii again, that's fine. But if they do what they have been doing with handhelds that outsell their competition and consoles as a supplement or as the rumor says, merge them, Nintendo will be fine. Their IP sells, their hardware sells decent numbers combined, but if they just make sure NX is priced well enough, they'll be fine.
