Exactly, at launch. Of course $299 wouldn't be a mass market price, but when has a console launched at a mass market price? Only the Wii did at $249 but it was extremely underpowered. We all have to remember that the 3DS, a pure handheld, launched at $249 and the Wii U at $299/$349.
Early adopters are willing to pay more. The NX could start at $299 in March 2017, get healthy early adopter sales of 3-4 million between March and October similar to the 3DS (who sold 5.1 mill between Feb 2011 to Sep 2011) and then it could get a price drop to $249 for Holidays 2017.
If we're lucky it starts at $249 and drops to $199 for the Holidays.
