Nintendo "learns" every generation. I've heard this every single generation since the N64, this time "Nintendo learned their lesson".

Problem with this is twofold

1.) Often times they make completely new mistakes, often times at a rate of 2:1. IE: we fixed cartridges with GameCube! No worries now. So lets make the console purple and not have a Mario game for launch.

2.) They fix mistakes, but the mistakes are fixed like 5-7 years too late so it makes no difference in the end.

ehhh, generally even with a Nintendo 'failure' they make a lot of money. Nintendo did very well in the Gamecube/GBA period in terms of profit. Its not always about selling the most as long as you have great margins. Just saying.

I personally think the Gamecube is one of the best systems ever made anyway.

In the end I think Mario at launch is less of a key than just having a few strong brands. If they launch with Zelda and a Pokemon tie in game that is just as good, if not better, than launching with a Mario game. Unless we're talking a Mario Galaxy (which is the Mario brand that needs to be brought back, its by far the most popular recent variant)

and honestly not surprising comments from Ubisoft, it wouldn't take much to better the Wii U, considering that system conceptually is insanely flawed. Almost nobody in the gaming market in terms of fans, whether hardcore or casual, are looking for a system that has a giant awkward tablet controller to play games.

The pro controller worked fine in some cases, but when your primary controller is that awkward its a headache. Casuals sure as hell don't want a big tablet, they don't want to stare at their hands. and dedicated hardcore gamers likewise aren't going to want to screw around with a mini map in their lap. I don't know what NIntendo was thinking with the Wii U tablet controller its bizarre. they also probably would have done wayyyy better if they dropped the 'Wii' name. THe Wii U has very little in common with the original Wii and so consumers were just at a loss. those who loved the Wii wouldn't necessarily like the Wii U, and those looking for something entirely new would be confused in thinking its just Wii #2.

the NX is a fresh start and with the Nintendo IP behind it all that's left needed is a regular logical controller, a reasonable price, and a good starting library.

Nintendo claims to have been working overkill the last year or two in prepping the NX library so I would expect a killer launch set of titles. If they launch with Zelda, a Pokemon tie in game, something like Mario Galaxy, and a random lower franchise remergence (F-Zero? Kid Icarus?) then the system will do great.

just need that opening momentum

Well I mean aside from the fact that NX from the sounds of it may be a portable Wii U type console? lol.

I'm sure it'll sell better because it's actually portable.

But this "Nintendo will get it right this time" thing happens every generation, I've been following Nintendo for 25+ years now and it never fails.

Recall this gif from around the time the Wii U was unveiled and realize how stupid it looks today:

IMO, NX is not going to be the system "Nintendo fans on message boards" think it will be. I think it's largely going to be designed to appeal to kids who are currently choosing tablets/phones instead of Nintendo machines. That's the design goal that I think they have. We'll see though.
