It's funny you say that.
I think part of Star Citizens success is how hard it's pushing the PC.
Crysis also did stupidly well on PC compared to the sequels that didn't push PC hardware as far, same wen't for the original Far Cry.
Oblivion, Half Life, Doom 3, Stalker, Metro all pushed the PC pretty hard on their releases too.
With that said, we need to keep in mind that not all graphics effects actually cost money to implement, some graphics effects actually reduce development time and thus costs.

Star Citizen made 50+ Millions on Kickstarter+other things of the genre; The game is in development since 2011. I think that they still get the money of the people that purchase the Alpha + the Kickstarter.
A good looking game cost money and take a lot of time to be made. Some games like Star Citizen and Ark are paid before the release, because of Alpha/Beta sales and Kickstarter. That give time to the developers and enought money to make them stay independent
