XBox just sells too much for MS to pull the plug.

Even with everything that's gone wrong with the XBox One, it probably still was on track to sell 40+ million, which is as successful as the Sega Genesis, if the Dreamcast had sold 40 million units you can bet your ass Sega would've continued in hardware.

I think MS' best play is to maybe hope the NX falters or is portable centric enough and throw a shit-ton of money at Nintendo and allow Nintendo to take over the XBox console division, while MS can sit back and take over the back end stuff like XBox Live and continue to push the brand.

I think MS likes being in the console business, they just don't like doing all the work that comes with it, and I think they know they need something big to even the odds against Sony. So let Nintendo take over the day-to-day game division operations, help finance the marketing side of it, and use it as a tool to push various Microsoft initiatives. Plus you could get Nintendo support Windows PC store, which would be a huge win for MS over STEAM.

Nintendo could have games on the XBox brand, their NX portable, iPhone, Android, and Windows PC ... but still having control over the XBox and NX hardware lines would allow Nintendo to stay in the hardware business, but get access to huge numbers of gamers else where.

Combined, Nintendo and MS counter-act the others weaknesses too creating a singular entity that is much more competitive in the marketplace.

MS doesn't need the money from the game business, it generates revenue sure, but actual profit margins are thin. It's more of an issue of brand prestige and being able to say "hey look we do other things outside of Windows and Office!".
